Bowen therapy is a form of bodywork that aims to relieve pain and improve motor function by stimulating the nervous system and stretching the fascia. The fascia is the soft tissue that covers the muscles and organs. Bowen therapy involves gentle, rolling hand movements over specific points on the body, such as muscles, tendons, ligaments, and skin. The technique was developed by Thomas Bowen, an Australian self-taught healer, in the 1950s. Bowen therapy is not a medical treatment, but a complementary or alternative therapy that may help with various conditions, such as frozen shoulder, migraine, back pain, neck pain, asthma, irritable bowel syndrome, stress, anxiety, and more. However, there is limited scientific evidence to support its effectiveness and safety. Bowen therapy sessions typically last 45 to 60 minutes and are done by a trained practitioner. The client may be asked to wear loose clothing or remove some clothing. The practitioner will perform the hand movements with pauses in between to allow the body to respond. The client may feel relaxed, warm, or tingling sensations during or after the session. Some people may experience temporary side effects, such as headache, fatigue, or soreness.
